Use what you can afford and design your experiments around what you have available. Sometimes the vigils with least equipment that force you to actually sit and observe are most rewarding.

If you do have equipment make sure you know how to use it and what it measures. Also position your equipment to get the best from it. If your vigil/experimental design is flawed then no matter results you get, they will also be flawed.

Hello,

It's incredibly difficult to gain any real average baselines from one visit to a location, and baselines are vital when trying to establish any usual fluctuations in the natural environment surrounding your location.

My best advice would be, whatever equipment you're using, try to visit the same location several times, preferably at lots of different times of the day and night, with equipment placed in the same areas as controls so you can gather true average baselines for temp, humidity, etc etc. If you really want to gain anything from using equipment.

It's a great advantage to be able to download all your data on to a pc if you can, it's much easier to analyse results later on.

It's difficult to say what equipment is actually needed, it depends on the nature of your group and why you are investigating. Those after proof to show others and into their science and apparatus will want all the gadgets possible, those going as mediums/sensitives will prefer to rely on their own 'findings'.

Either way the following is advisable:
Torch
Batteries
Recording device
Sensible shoes (I kid you not!)
Sensible head - this is probably more vital and important than any other piece of equipment you'll have, it's easy to be fooled in the dark and equally as easy to let your imagination run away with you!

Zane, this is hard due to what I use may not be what you would want to use. Ad that if your wanting to do just studio then that is one way to go or if your going to go out on location there are other ways to go.
So, here is what I use as a starting point.
Power pack for 4 strobe light heads, 4 heads, 4 light stands, two soft boxes, two white umbrellas, extra clamps and two grid clamp on covers. Plus portable background stand and over the years a number of backgrounds from painted canvas to paper in a good number of colors. Plus the flash meter that is NEEDED when your doing power pack flash work.
