My parents lived next door to a couple who were not only neighbours but close family friends to them and also my grandparents. Myself and my brother were very close to the man, who we called 'Uncle Ted' and looked on him as a '2nd dad'. I used to wake up most mornings at the same time and hear Uncle Ted come out of his back door to open his garage and get his car out for work. He had a very distinctive cough and i knew when i heard him cough and open the garage door, it was almost time for me to get up for school.

Uncle Ted developed brain cancer and passed away when i was just 6 yrs old. I remember my mum coming into my room at 7am to tell me that Uncle Ted had gone to heaven early that morning. I was devestated.

Not long after he had died, i woke up again at the same time in the morning. I lay there in my bed when suddenly, i heard Uncle Ted cough and open his garage. Being so young, i jumped out of bed thinking he had ' become alive again'. I looked out of my window ( i could see into their driveway ) but no one was there. I was very confused but didnt think much about it. But every morning for quite a while, it kept happening. I would hear Uncle Ted cough and open his garage door but when i looked, there was no one there. I was beginning to get very confused by this point. Was Uncle Ted really dead or had someone made a mistake?

My mum could see something was troubling me but i didnt want to say anything in case she told me off. In the end i did tell her, expecting her to tell me off for being silly but she didnt. She said she'd heard him too...

It stopped a short while afterwards. Maybe Uncle Ted couldnt get out of the habit of going to work...

yes i'm sure it was his way of letting us know. I'm sure when he was alive he must've known i looked out my window to see him get his car out for work so maybe this was his way of letting me know he was ok but not scaring me due to my tender age. Smile
