I was born in Wickford, so not far from there. Wouldn't say I know it that well, but I'm familiar with parts of it.

LOL I live right near Wickford & closer to stow maries than Wickford.

I was going to ask if you know the old disused train tunnel which now has a road going over it, into Stow Maries from South Woodham Ferrers ?

It's a massive tunnel, well there's 2 one is slightly smaller next to the main one.

If you didn'y know it was beneath you, you'd miss it, driving over it. The tunnel is down a long straight-ish road then as you go over the tunnel, you take a right turn round a bend.

Does this make any sense so far ?

Ok, now this is where you stop taking me seriously! :p

A lot of people assume that an spirit is a form of energy, which would seem logical if we assume the residual is some form of energy. I, however, disagree with this hypothesis (note, use of word of today)

My theory? Ok, now this may sound barmy, but I believe that the spirit is closer to physical than energy, possibly even a sub atomic particle (my knowledge of physics isnt good enough to be able to gues much more around this)

Why? I hear you ask. Well, think about it. IF a residual is a form of energy, then what is the similarity between spirit and residual? Manifestation! Energy drops are frequent around spirits when haunting, anything from battery drain (electricity) to heat loss (heat), however where do spirits go when these drains aren't occurring? They go nowhere, however as they're not actively manifesting they require much smaller energy amounts.

I'll try to explain myself. With a residual, we're seeing a projection of an event, a bit like in a cinema. As with the cinema, the projector needs energy, else there'll be no light, and no projection/ghost. In this case the projector isnt actually there still, but it chucked out enough energy for the vision to still linger (try looking at a bright light/window then look away at a plain dark wall, you'll still "see" the residual of the window.

With a spirit, I'd theorise that the spirit IS the projector, and the ghost we're seeing isn't an actual spirit, but a projection from it. remember that light and vision is just an electromagnetic impuls, just because we "see" something, doesnt mean it's actually there, it could just be a projection. If the spirit is the projector, then like in our cinema, when it's not showing a film/ghost, it's not using energy. When it is manifesting, it needs energy, and this is when we get cold spots/battery drains.

So, why did I suggest that a spirit could be sub atomic? Well, and I could be wrong, I find it more likely that it's physical if it's capable of manipulating energy in this way. Maybe it's something completely new, who knows? All we do know is that it has plentiful sources of energy available, and these seem tio diminish during haunts.

Ok, ok, I know your next question, why are there more haunts reported at night, when there's more energy ie sunlight, during the day? My answer? because at night we're more susceptible to the idea of haunts, and we rely more on our secondary "night" vision (can never remember if its the cones or rods) which seem to pick up more (thus we often see more out of the corner of our eye)

Way off the original topic, but hopefully of interest still :)

Quite interesting actually.
You have done a wonderful job in explaining it in layman's terms.
Thank-you.

I have read where a group performed their "ghost hunting" during the daylight hours.
I never followed up on the outcome of their findings.
Would be interesting to read how they fared on their daylight hunt.

Another question if you don't mind.

How is it that some folks can see/hear these manifestations and some cannot?
Could it be that the ghost/spirit chooses who it wants to be seen by, by the energy they project or possibly their sensitivity to the supernatural?

Not been there for ages to be honest, my recollections of SWF were trips to Asda (when it was still pretty new!) and marsh farm.

If it runs pretty much from Whitehouse road, SWF, south of Stow maries, and then on to the Latchingdon Road at cold Norton, then it can be clearly made out on google maps/earth

I'd say it's a combination to be honest. Some people have better hearing or eyesight than others, and some are more attuned to the spiritual than others. I'd hazzard a guess that if it's related to telepathy, then it can in some sense be directed to a particular person, meaning sometimes ghosts can chose as to who to manifest to.

Finally I'd say it's down to personal atitude. If you're more open to things, you'll see more of them. I'll wager that since getting an interest in the paranormal, and discussing it regularly, you've seen much more.

Want an example? look around you blankly, and what do you see? A load of objects no doubt. Now, start concentrating on the colour red. Nothing else, just red. Notice how suddenly all the red objects jump into view? By concentrating on something, you see it more. Similarly with ghosts, by thinking about them, you're more open to seeing them. Conversely if you're in denial about their existence, your brain will just not believe what it sees, put it down to an illusion, and not tell your conscious mind about it.

Well from my experience I would say YES !

we used to all camp under this huge disused train tunnel so we could drink & not have to walk home, plus we had our own company out the way. Anyway one night 3 of us stayed under this bridge & as we were about to drop of to sleep it felt like someone throwing stones. Little stones like pebbles as if messing about or trying to get our attention.

My friend said was I throwing stones, stop messing about. We were tired & trying to sleep out in the open in just our sleeping bags. I said I didn't throw anything & as I spoke one hit my sleeping bag too. The 3rd friend was already sleeping & we were sort of side by side so we could all have seen if any one of us threw something.

We always joked about it being haunted.

In the morning we woke up & there were horse hooves deep in the ground right at the bottom of our feet & we heard nothing. We hadn't drunk that night & stayed as an excuse not to go home so we could stay out later. The night before there were definately no horse hoove tracks as we could see the ground. We knew it was possible for a horse to go through, but how would we not have heard a horse. The echo would have been loud I'm sure of a horse trotting through a tunnel. But again why right at the bottom of our feet - within inches. I'm sure a rider wouldn't risk the horse treading on us. The space under this tunnel is huge with no obstacles. It just seemed very odd.

Wow!
Doom, have you gone back to the tunnel to do any investigating?

Did you have to yell out to have the rocks stop being thrown at you or did they stop on their own?
That is a bit unnerving having the horse hooves so close to your sleeping bags.
Did it look as though it was more than one horse?

Have you looked into the history of this tunnel and surrounding area yet?

update for you. They're restoring this old airfield, and turning it into a museum.

I actually Emailed the curator, and got a reply. Apparently other people have heard this "aeroplane"

Nothing online about the tunnel, or hauntings. Just this about the history of the line.
