Acklam Hall is a manor house in my home town of Middlesbrough, UK. It was built by the Hustler family in the 1600s.

In the 20th century it served as: Acklam Hall Grammar School; King's Manor Comprehensive (until the 1990s); and Middlesbrough College. I believe it is now used as an administrative building by Middlesbrough Council. In the late 1980s it narrowly escaped destruction when the neighbouring science block, a modern building, was destroyed in an arson attack. The explosion of a large gas cylinder could be heard over a mile away. I know this because I heard it myself, and when I looked out of my back window, could see clouds in the distance glowing red.

Although I didn't go to that school (I went to one just over the road), I was aware of the stories about the place, in particular the Grey Lady, a woman who terrified children by appearing, still and silent, on the back staircase. She was believed to be Charlotte Hustler who died in childbirth in 1800.

Over the years I heard a number of kids claim to have seen her, still others who had heard - second hand - that someone had encountered the apparition and refused to enter the building again. No one has ever thought to take a photograph.

Er, no. Shocked Not that I'm scared or owt. It's just that I now live quite a way from there. And I bet they wouldn't let me in. And I probably wouldn't see anything anyway. So no point.
