This is a spooky but true tale of an experience I had when I was 18 years old (back in the dark ages). In a remote part of Yorkshire I lived and worked as a poultry process worker and the partner of a man who treated me badly and hit me. My life wasn't great and I'd been through a lot, not just with him but with my fractured family, parents who'd divorced, then a big move from my home in Scotland to this bleak place.. Keighley, West Yorkshire. Well as it happened, one day I had enough, my partner tried to strangle me when I told him I was going to go shopping that weekend with a friend. He should have been ok with it, but he wasn't. I was 2 months pregnant with his baby and his excuse for what he did was that he wanted to go shopping with me and was upset I didn't want him to come along. He wasn't careful and the whole incident happened at work, he was dragged along the corridor screaming and yelling so you could hear it throughout the factory, endless strangled yells.. "I love you.. I love you.."
Tough love wasn't it? I was afraid to go home that night and so I didn't. I went to my stepmother who arranged a place for me at a womens hostel. I'd hoped she'd let me stay there with my Dad but no such luck. I went to this old terraced house in Keighley which wasn't very well looked after. There were four storeys to it, lots of rooms and it looked like it was falling apart. I was allocated a small room in the attic, and was just glad to be somewhere safe.

Well I stayed there for a little while and tried to go to work but my partner had set up a vigil there so I had to be careful. My Boss wasn't happy and wanted me to do something to sort it out but what could I do? One night I made my way home to the hostel after work and just wanted to rest and take my mind off my stupid life. I bought a magazine and went upstairs to the cold dark little attic room, it was February and foggy outside, but that room felt colder than the rest of the house. There was no heating. I could even have sworn it was foggy inside that room. I was reading my magazine, drinking diet coke and even though it was cold I was ok. Things started to change quickly though, for no reason in particular I started to feel afraid and anxious. I felt as if someone was in the room with me, but I couldn't see anything. A few minutes later I heard footsteps, not loud or anything just as if someone was walking along the hall on the carpet and then I could hear them in the room. Something then sat on my bed, and the bed jolted in the same way it would if someone had just sat down. I went cold inside.. my heart beating ten to the dozen. I looked up and could see the dent in the mattress where whoever it was had sat down. I pretended to ignore it and went back to reading my magazine. As if to protest, it stood up and sat down again, jolting the bed. I've seen ghosts before and so I sort of knew what to do, not like anyone told me, but I said to it.. "I'm not interested and you aren't going to scare me!" Then I put the lamp out and rolled over as if to go to sleep.

A few moments later I heard the two kiddies in the room across the hall screaming, and things being smashed against the walls. The mother ran out with the kids and took them downstairs. I didn't move, I didn't really know her or her children and didn't want to make a fuss. I found out later that the children had seen a man in the room and she didn't, and that objects were apparently flying around and smashing themselves against the wall.

Anyways, later that night I awoke because the lamp was on and I sat up in bed. There was a man standing with his back to me looking out of the window. He was about 5,9 and black/jamaican, looked He turned around and I don't remember actually speaking to him, just that he was trying to get my baby, or to get inside of me, I had to really mentally struggle with him and I do remember thinking in my head the words "You are dead, you do not belong here.. you are dead!"

I watched as a golden light appeared behind him and he turned around and stepped into it. Finally the struggle against him was over and the disturbances in the attic were no more. People often asked me if I was ok in that room and I never told them what happened.

No my life didn't get better, and there were more poltergeist experiences later on, but those are other stories. And thats the truth of the Keighley Poltergiest. Make of it what you will.
