HI All
I am new here and decided to join this forum as I wondered if anyone has ever visited White Ladies Priory on the A5 on the way to Wolverhampton? I visited once as a child with my Dad, the Priory is well off the beaten track and you have to turn down a lane to get to it. It was a clear night until we turned off the main road into the Priory. The wind began to roar and it began raining heavily, the road was too dark to see up ahead so we turned back. As soon as we got back to the main road, the weather was immediately as clear as it was before. I have never forgotten how strange that was. Some twenty years later, I visited again with ny husband, completely by chance as we were passing. He is a complete sceptic, but agreed to stop for a look around. It was the middle of the day and mid July so relatively warm. The road had changed significantly and you can no longer drive down the lane that Dad and I did, so we had to park on the road and walk the lane to a gate which led to the Priory. The walls are in ruins but stand really forbodingly in the middle of nowhere. Walking towards them I got this really uncomfortable feeling, like waiting outside the Head Teachers office!! nervous turning over stomach feeling, hard to explain. There seems to be no air or atmosphere, its almost as if the place stands still, so eerie and quiet, yet not that far from civilisation. I wandered in through the main arched entrance whilst my husband walked around the outside walls. We were the only people there, yet the whole time I was inside, I felt watched, like I was trespassing. One one particular spot I felt the hairs on my neck stand up and I was covered in goosebumps! I moved away from the area and then returned to the spot and the same thing happened again. We met up again on the outside of the walls. My husband said he had also had a very strange feeling, like an adrenaline rush, pumped sort of feeling, making him sort of extra alert. We intend to go back because there is something definately not right about that place. Please contact me if you have ever been there as I am keen to learn of others experiences...

Welcome to the forum Mel!

Thanks for sharing your experience with us.
Someday I hope I will have a chance to visit
England so as I can visit these places.

Do you have any history of The White Ladies Priory?

Melanie,

1) How do you know you were the only people there?
2) Yes, you was trespassing.

I used to take part in a hobby called urban exploration or "urbex" where we would enter abandoned buildings to take photos etc, some housed many fantastic features and details, on many occasions urbexers have run into homeless people at these sites seeking shelter so its quite possible that there was a "gentleman of leisure" there with you watching. Its not uncommon for people to take refuge in numbers maybe 5 or so, this could account for the fact that your husband had strange feeling also.

Do not worry if caught trespassing, it is a CIVIL offence and not a criminal offence. In the first instance you are asked to leave, do so! As long as you have not caused damage or are suspected of carryng items to cause damage, or taken from the site your are not commiting a criminal offence. Causing damage also includes gaining entry however, if there is a hole in the fence, go through it, if the door is open you can enter as the building is not secure.
Also, security guards are not allowed to detain you in these situations as long as the above is followed.

Sorry for waffling on, but thought i would add my opinion and maybe you should search for a local urbex forum and sign up, see if any one has explored it or even arrange an explore?

All the best.

Hi Melanie and welcome Very Happy

While your experience may seem odd it's by no means unusual or IMO related to anything supernatural. There are several reasons why you and your husband may have felt these feelings - from expectation bias to anxiousness or even low blood sugar caused by the anticipation of the location (the fight or flight response) and they are perfectly natural rather than supernatural.
People pick up all types of subjective feelings from buildings - some positive or some negative as in your case and often these are due to a degree of prior knowledge and cultural conditioning. I experienced the same anticipation and similar feelings on a recent trip to an allegedly haunted ruin despite being a sceptic and having some knowledge of the cognitive sciences.
Please let us know if you make another trip and experience anything further.

DB

Carlos - I would like to clarify that the site is owned and maintained by The English Heritage and is open to visitors - therefore we were definately NOT trespassing. Just wanted to clear that up. thanks for the links, yes that is the place, as you can see it is quite open and in ruins, there was definately nobody else there, there is only one way in and one way out and during the time - we were not passed by anyone else. There is just a very strange feeling to the place, since posting on here i have googled it and found that others have had a similar feeling.
DN Sweeney - thanks for this - it does make sense, weather permitting, we are hoping to go along tomorrow - will update you further...

HI all - we have revisited today and taken some photos which i will post shortly, there is something very strange about the place and i hope from the photos you will get the isolation of the place. I got the same uneasy feeling today, although not as badly as before. The ruins seemed smaller today. Someone has daubed a cross in green paint, on the gate post which i found quite strange. The feeling i got again was very odd and did make me feel unwelcome. Pics to follow x

I have spent some time trawling the web and have found that people have reported very strange occurences at the priory including hearing chanting, distant screams, being tapped on the head and also the feeling of being watched. The legend states that the priory was burned to the ground by soldiers with the nuns inside!
