Very good points Iain. Ideally (although this is not always possible) investigations should be done blind ie with no prior knowledge of the history or the alleged phenomena reported.
Expectancy and confirmation bias is a real problem when all parties are aware of a locations history. IMO most hauntings are manufactured to one degree or another by those experiencing them.

if i were to go on a investigation i wouldnt want to know the history of the place then if you did get any results you could compare it with the history reported |

And that's the ideal approach Flossy. Prior knowledge can have an influence and certainly contribute to and skew the data. Luckily, I've investigated properties where I wasn't informed of what was being experienced or was given any history.

Without citing specific cases (which I will if asked) the answer is 'no'. In some investigations I was party to the phenomena that was being reported but the sounds and in some cases visuals were ruled out and a natural explanation given which (I might add) was accepted in almost (but not quite) all instances.
People are easily fooled. People who believe in ghosts report ghosts.

Very true Iain.Research is an essential part of a properly conducted investigation but it's best left like a pudding - digested after the main course
