i dont think anyone can ease your mind and tell you exactly what it was you saw
what makes this interesting is that you both saw it
maybe it was a ghost, who knows Wink

there was a famous incident once with the royal train which was at the time carrying the queen,

A moth had been attracted to the head light of the train and its projection caused the train driver to stop, he thought he seen a figure go infront of the train.

Believe the A1 to be fairly country route, so it could of been an insect dancing for your headlights.

Ive even seen owls fly low across infront of vehicles(even my own) at night, the angle makes them seem vertical.

Has anyone on the forum had any experiences on the A1, and can possibly help settle my mind. Ive been up that road, dozens of timesm never seen anything, but this has left me puzzled and amazed.
At 410 miles it's the country's longest numbered road, so I'm sure people have had plenty of experiences on it.
The only experience I can recall personally of the A1, is when the fan belt went on my dad's car while driving along it once, circa 1967.

I used to live inthe village of Fairburn ( just north of Ferrybridge) and when the A1 used to run straight through the village, we as kids, used to run over the A1 (foolish i know). If we used to do it, whose to say others didn't and maybe some wearn't as lucky as us.....we all survived.

Drive along any road at night for long enough and I guarantee that those who 'believe' will see 'something' they attribute to the supernatural.

Thanks for the replies. As one mentioned if u believe it u will see it well i never actually said i do 100% believe in ghosts did i? Only there is something after life.
As for the owl and insect theory well that is deffo a non starter. Whatever i saw went through the central barrier. When i say through it means through. You can see the barrier with no shadow etc on it.
As it happens i went along there again last week and saw nothing. However did have an interesting talk with a trucker parked up in the scottish borders layby.

Turns out about 2 years ago about 10 mile further up just at dusk, a woman and child were standing at the side of the road in bad snow. He slowed down just past them as he was going to see they were ok and as he looked in his mirrors they vanished. He stopped and went back but nothing.

Do you think that what you saw was a source of light in itself, or only visible in your headlights?

I believe what i saw was not caused by the headlights. The thing had a movement to it like an arm swinging pretty fast like someone either running or walking quite fast. The headlights on a car/van as u know dont point straight ahead or upwards unless on full beam they point slightly to the left and down.
Whatever i saw had a light source of its own and and appeared in the middle of the carriageway and moved into the opposite carriageway staying illuminated exactly the same before vanishing

That's how most of the light is directed, however a small amount is diffused over practically 180 degrees, so there's still an element of doubt.
As someone quite rightly pointed out on here recently, it's only a matter of time before vehicles are fitted as standard with forward-facing cameras. If those cameras are capable of recording the phenomena witnessed by drivers, then we'll really have something to discuss.

I went back to Merseyside this weekend just gone for a visit, and on my way, I decided to mess about a bit on the roads with my lights.

I travelled from Brechin to Liverpool overnight, so this allowed me to experiment as the road was deserted.

The road In question is the A702 in Scotland. I notice DB is based in Edinburgh so he may well know this road quite good, as it is the main link from Penicuick to Moffat.

The road itself in bits is like the A1 but single carriageway. The surroundings, curves, and trees lining the road etc are relatively similar.
Using dipped and full beams I made quite a few patterns, mainly the lights reflecting off the white lines into the trees, and also as driving it was like the reflections off the lines were just moving in front of me, but travelling the same way I may add.
I still could not recreate the image crossing the road from left to right, although I did manage to make a lot of images that, If I had not been trying to make them, I could have thought at first glance were strange.
