Hi All
06-06-2009
Coalhouse Fort Investigation
Coalhouse Fort is a Victorian coastal defence fort set in parkland next to the river Thames at East Tilbury, Essex, completed in 1874, to defend the approaches to London from the perceived threat of invasion from France.
Both myself and a friend Jason booked up for an overnight investigation of the fort with the Paranormal Tours company. We arrived at about 9.30pm and waited for the rest of the investigators to arrive. When we were all together we had a tour around the fort which was in a pretty dilapidated state but very interesting and full of atmosphere.. We were lead down into the labyrinth of very dark, cold and damp tunnels that served as ammunition rooms for the guns that protected us against invasion.
We split into 4 teams and spent aprox 1 hr in each of the 4 locations.
Location 1: Room 8
This was a very dark room with benches all round so we could sit down. We had a Medium with us who picked up on a man who’s face had been burnt. We heard many knocks throughout the vigil as well as whimpers, snuffling noises like a dog having a good sniff round and what sounded like a cat meowing. The medium had a stone thrown at him while he was in the corridor. I went out to take some EMF readings and heard a stone fall near me.
The temperature of the room during the vigil fell by about 8 degrees and most people felt they had cold legs. At the end of the vigil the medium got hit in the face by a pebble and I heard a small stone hit the floor then felt it hit my shoe. The pebble was 0.8 degrees warmer than the floor it was sitting on.
All in all a fantastic hour spent in the dark.
Location 2: Aircraft Museum
This location consists of 3 rooms and is full of aircraft parts collected from the local area, mostly WW2. There are also models and many pictures. We headed to the farthest room and continued with a séance. We heard knocks from the furthest corner but we were not sure if it was spirit or natural so we headed off to the main room. While walking through the middle room Jason, the team leader and myself heard a young female voice say ‘hello’ which was crystal clear. I thought it was the walkie talkies but later found out that no one used them at the time. Also there was no noise of someone pressing the button before talking and releasing it afterwards. This we thought was amazing.
In the main room we held another séance and one member felt there was someone standing in our circle. Most of us felt odd and I felt anxious which is very unusual for me. These feelings went after about 10 mins and nothing else happened apart from a few members seeing moving shadows.
Another great hour in a superb location.
Location 3: Room 24 and the room next door.
Well to be blunt nothing happened except that I got poked on the left arm. The lady to my left had both her hands in her pocket and her elbow was about 12” away from my arm. She swore that she didn’t move and didn’t hit me with her elbow or anything else.
The rest of the vigil was pitch black and quiet.
Location 4: The Latrines (Original men’s toilets)
We had a large sheet of paper on a table in the middle of the room and on it was a planchet which is a triangle of wood and at one point is a pencil which touches the paper so if it moves it will draw onto the paper. We all put our fingers on the planchet and I asked for the spirit to move the planchet towards me as it had started moving. The planchet moved towards me for about 8 inches. I then asked the spirit to move the planchet towards the man opposite me. The planchet changed direction and moved towards the mad opposite for about 5” and then moved 90 degrees for a further 2” before stopping. The rest of the vigil was quiet regardless of what we asked for. By this time the light was starting to come through the small windows so we decided to end the investigation.
Through out the investigation the EMF meter did not move and all room temperatures remained pretty constant apart from Room 8!
All in all a fantastic night for me as I had some personal experiences and I would love to return some day as it’s an amazing place.

WOW, Amzing night then hey?
Sounds like it was well worth it, I think for me reading your report of that night. Room 8 would have been the highlight. As I do get a little spooked by hearing sounds of animals and not seeing them and you very rarely hear a mention of ghostly animals etc.
I have my own beliefs when it comes to cats and death and I think it was perhaps crucial to mention what it is you heard.
Thanks for sharing |

Thanks,
Room 8 was quite busy for all the teams except one. The loos were busy for one team where stones were being thrown at the investigators from both ends of the room at the same time! It's a very cool place and if you have seen the latest Batman movie then there is a 3 min section of a prison which was filmes at the fort.
Cool eh! |

Glad to hear you had an eventful night.
The investigators that had stones thrown at them, were they asking for some type of sign and this is what transpired?

Yes we were. The medium and i had stones thrown at us. It was SO cool. The good thing about it was that there was a little light coming from the mediums hand torch so we could see if anyone was throwing the stones which they were not. |

Never been to Coalhouse fort, though been to the other one at Tilbury a few times. Would have loved to have gone, if only for the buildings themselves. Where are you off to next?
Incidentally, remember my mention before about the old airfield at Stow Maries? I believe there are plans now to turn it into a museum. Saw something about it on "Look East" whilst at my folks in Norfolk |

Next 2 investigations are:
1: Bolebroke Castle, Hartfield, East Sussex - 25 September 2009
2: Preston Manor, nr Brighton, East Sussex - 05 December 2009
There may be more. I am probably going to start my own investigation team so will be off on more ghost hunts throughout the year. Me and my ghost buddy mate are meeting a local chap in the next couple of weeks to talk about starting our own paranormal investigation group. All details will be posted when things are up and running.
I did contact you via Private message as you asked about a local group. Kaz was also contacted but neither of you have replied about it so if you are interested then drop me a line. That goes for KAZ too. |

This may sound like a silly question, but here goes...
Did you happen to pick up any of the stones that were thrown?
I was wondering if they had any temperature to them.
Cold or warm?

Forgot to ask:
Did any of the stones hit you? |

Now, by chance, did you experiment with another stone to see how
long you would have to hold it for it (the stone) to be .6 degrees warmer?
Cool that you kept the stone that was thrown at you!
Is the floor littered with stones? |

bitterbuck1: No, didn't do any experiments on the stone and no there were NO stones on the floor in our room. There were a few in the corridor but not many.
Sulstice Moon.
Moving so soon!! Give me a shout when you are ready. We am having a meeting in a few weeks to talk about starting the group. So far there are 3 of us. |
