I am reading a book atm called Embraced by the light by Betty J Eadie describing her NDE - Near death experience - it is very interesting and I just thought I would post it here:

Betty Eadie was a Mormon before and during her NDE experience which would account for the heavily religious nature of her encounters. Eadie has changed her account of what happened several times depending on the audience to which she is speaking. Her book was originally published as a Mormon book by Mormon publishers and it quickly became the no1 selling book amongst Mormons.
The general public then picked up on her story, which was quickly changed to be more palatible to the general audience. She quickly became a "Christian" and her books sold in Evangelical stores. Then, suddenly, Jesus in the light became just a light that could be Buddha or some other religious figure to someone else. There are actually two versions of her book--one for Mormons and one for the rest of the country. Her original MORMON volume recounts how Jesus told Eadie abortion was wrong, it is a crime against the child. Then , in her second book, Jesus is suddenly very pro-choice and is saying something completely different. Also, distinctively Mormon phrases are removed.
I'm deeply sceptical of any paranormal experience that immediately has obvious religious overtones and an agenda to promote religion.

I wouldn't be so completely anti-religion, after all Jesus was saying forgive as the nails were being drove into his hands; that is powerful. |

What basis do you believe that a) Jesus existed and was crucified and b) That the words attributed to him were actually spoken by him?.

No. Some Theologians may err on the side of belief based on faith but most Biblical scholars would not categorically say that the Gospels are an accurate account of the life and death of the Jesus character and would certainly not say that the words attributed to him are factually correct.

D B Sweeney, I haven't seen it mentioned anywhere that she was a mormon. |

Probably a bit of both.

It's impossible to know either way - I think there is a small chance her experience was genuine. |

Her NDE could be legitimate but her subjective interpretation of it is shaped heavily by her prior religious beliefs. She may have experienced typical 'Brian closing down' activity which may have had visual dream like elements to it. As she has told and re-told the story it has been embellished, added to and parts subtracted - that's the way memory and recall works.

Well if it wasn't real she still deserved to be the No.1 Bestseller because it was a hell of a story I guess like most of these things we will never know either way unfortunately. |

But we can weight up the evidence based on what we know and come to an informed conclusion.
