Help needed, events that I simply cant explain.

First of all id just like to introduce myself and say hello, this is my first post here and I have been prompted to make it as im in search of answers. Im not a particularly superstitious person, I dont particularly believe in ghosts (but at the same time dont close myself off to the idea). Last week I had an experience that has made me question my very beliefs, I dont know what to think so thought id ask some people who may be a bit more in the know on this topic than I am. Anyway Ill explain whats happened:

I was returning from a friends birthday (small gathering, nothing big), on my way home i stopped and got food from the local chip shop as It had been a while since Id ate. Upon getting back to my house (I share with 5 others, student accommodation) I climbed the stairs (neglected to put the light on as I never tend to at night time). About half way up (they go in a curve around the wall) I stopped dead and saw what I believed to be my flatmate, at the top of the stairs staring at me. I was a little taken aback at first but thought little of it. I said "Hiya" to what I thought was her, no response came so I took a step closer up the stairs. (At this point it should be noted that, despite it being dark I could very clearly make out a figure, the colour hair, height, where she was standing, direction she was looking etc). Anyway upon moving forward the figure shot away into nothing, the only way I can describe its movement is similar to how an inflated balloon flies away if you let it go without tying the end up. It took me a few moments to realise what had happened, I then moved to my room and tried to gather my thoughts.

Im left utterly stumped by the events of that night. Ive never particularly liked the landing where it took place, ive constantly thought id seen shadows etc by a certain wall in the dark on it but just believed that to be my head playing tricks on me. I had not drank, was not tired, nor was under the influence of any drugs/caffeine etc etc. I have absolutely no explanation for the event and am left both intrigued and worried as to what happened...Does this sound similar to any stories heard on this site before? Thanks for any help.

Hiya, A very interesting post you have written, Firstly think your self as a very lucky person, I go ghost hunting nearly every weekend and we long to see what you saw, the floating you said that the lady in question was doing may be because the floors/walls have been changed spirit (ghosts) only remember the place as it was thats why you hear so many people say things such as "they had no head" or "they had no legs". There is really no need to be alarmed or worry she was probably more frightened of you than you of her, hence the reason for her going, my advice to you is do not doubt what you have seen nor let people tell you that you have made it up (there are far too many people that say these things) embrace what you have seen you are really lucky.

I read once of a case in which a woman would be seen walking along a street and passing through solid objects like cars. The unusual aspect to the case was that the woman was recognised as a living person, who claimed that she would often imagine herself walking that route.
It may be that your flatmate is capable of doing the same, perhaps unknowingly.

Interesting indeed, if you have seen shaddows there before and have never witnessed this event prior or after you may be dealing with an intelligent haunt rather than a residual event. If it was a residual it was nothing more than a repeat event like a recording on time. These are the ones that have no knowledge of you at all and may seem to walk through doors that we can't see etc. The intelligent however is dully aware of you and may interact with you.
Either way I don't see anything to worry about, there is nothing in your post to indicate mdlevolence etc. Judy concider yourself lucky and enjoy the oportunity to be able to tell a great ghost story :)
