Hello there! I've been interested in the paranormal for a while now, and I've joined this forum in the hopes of doing some research for a small budget film I'm planning on making for a university project! So if you've got any good research sites or some interesting stories I'd be so grateful and happy to hear them!
Thank You!

Hi Princess,
What's the nature of the film ie what subject matter will it cover?

Hello :)
Basically it's a low budget student film based around a haunting, but nothing really extreme- we have a really limited special effects budget!
It's in the really early stages so this is my first stop when it comes to research!

Good quality, scary films can be made on relatively small budgets and don't require any post production SFX.
Effective films that usually have hauntings as their themes use psychological shocks and the power of suggestion to engage and frighten their audiences. Both Paranormal Activity and The Blair Witch Project are good examples of this where the fear is built gradually and is a fear of the unknown and unseen rather than highly graphic rotting corpses looming out of walls.
The most effective and often the simplest technique is to begin with the familiar ie: people and a location that the audience can relate to (and image themselves in that position) and then slowly build the suspense and shocks as the characters reactions are explored and the story develops.
I'm a firm believer in the premise that all our frights and fears are the creation of our own imagination taking unusual but explainable sights and sounds and building them into ghosts of our own creation.
As some general pointers try Googling The Enfield Poltergeist, The Mackenzie Poltergeist and see if you can get a copy of a book called Will Storr vs The Supernatural.

The whole premise of Blair Witch and Paranormal Activity is what I was going for to be honest with you, and I'm planning on relying heavily on fishing wire for my special effects hehe! Thank you for the tips to google!

Good. I loved those films. Fine fishing wire can easily be edited out in relatively simple post production editing programmes. You only have to see the cack that's posted on YouTube to see that this is not hard to do.
Good luck with your project and feel free to come on here for any advice. Also try www.theparanormalgateway.com as I've found them to be an excellent source of advice for anyone wanting to research the paranormal.
