Hi Binny and welcome
Very young children have an imagination and an understanding of the world around them that is very much still developing. We often make the mistake of looking at the world through their eyes but using our brain and the references and logic we have built up over many years.
Children are influenced by many things from TV to family and other children they also seek approval and acceptance. We all know stories about children creating imaginary friends who they talk to and interact with as though they genuinely existed. Perhaps your childrens experience is or was a diluted version of this.
As for the smell maybe you have a heightened sensitivity to certain smells. My partner can smell things that I can't. I used to work with a girl who said she could smell the Kellogs Cornflake factory which was 7 miles away when no one else could.
It's a fact that a dogs sense of smell is far far superior to a humans - the smell may be coming in from an outside source and not have anything to do with the supernatural. You could be linking the smell and your childrens experiences and coming to the wrong conclusion entirely.
Most things that people put down to ghosts and the supernatural tend to have perfectly rational explanations.

Welcome to the forum Binny!
I tend to agree with what Flossy wrote, that children seem to have that ability to see and/or hear things some of us adults cannot.
