"I'll not be spending any more than 200 or 300 for a telescope. I'm not sure what zoom etc I can get for that, but it will have to do."

I don't know what was spent on mine, as it was a birthday present some years ago. (Won't be giving away my age, btw Smile) My parents were clearly trying to tell me something! Wink

Thanks Henut for those links, I really hope those antimater particles go up not down, I bet they do go up though. A suitable example in the picture there what with Marty on the board...I want one.

2-300 quid, on a scope sounds a good price to get something decent.

My telescope is one of these, Cactus:-

http://www.scopesnskies.com/prod/sky-watcher/telescope-for-astronomy-and-general-spotting/visiomar.html

To quote from the site:-

"a classic 60mm spotting scope design, gave it a powerful (20x to 60x) and comfortable high-eye-point zoom eyepiece and exceptional close-focus ability (under 5m to make the telescope perfect for field and garden close-up wildlife watching..."

Which I like doing. As we have lots in our garden. Not so many UFOs, though! Wink

Frankly, I preferred the French guy, Alex. I don't think I could quite comment on the German girl, Cactus Wink

60X zoom? That sounds fairly good? It's a pity you didn't reach for it Henut when you saw that object in the sky Neutral

Do you do skywatches regularly?

Our house and conservatory is above the level of the garden. The latter opens onto a patio. The garden is fairly long and narrow, with several trees and bushes. So we get quite a bit of wildlife. But because of neighbouring houses and gardens as well, it's not an ideal spot for 'skywatching'.

Buy it's nice to go bird and animal 'spotting' when doing the housework;) Which gives me another 'hobby', while my husband is at work, and our son is at school. That's why the telescope lives in the conservatory.

Since we got it, the binocs have been 'relegated' upstairs to a drawer in the back bedroom. From its window we saw the 'UFO' [or whatever it was]. The view of the sky from here is OK. And the binocs worked pretty well.

But would it not be hard to focus on birds with the telescope, because they jump, run and fly about so quickly?

Have you read or learned a little about astronomy yourself; how can you identify the planets?

Can you see the rings of jupiter etc..?

Have never tried, Cactus. With either type of 'bird'Wink

Henut (Sarah) is my Big Sis, btw. I leant her one or two books on astronomy. Mum and Dad bought the telescope. It was for both of us. But I lost interest in it, pretty quickly. Must've been the 'birds' - very distracting.... Very Happy

Cactus, before you run you must learn to walk...
Whilst you save up spend out £20 on a star chart book and also one of those round maps of the galaxy.
Then you can begin to identify star constellations by locating the North star or something else obvious and going from there.

When your scope comes you'l already be an experty at locating and impressing freinds by naming stars then you can start working out how to use the scope.

Animals mus be a nightmare though but the stars do move too and at a full zoom will quikly move across your feild of veiw.
Hello Shadowdancer and welcome.
