Whilst you save up spend out £20 on a star chart book and also one of those round maps of the galaxy.
Then you can begin to identify star constellations by locating the North star or something else obvious and going from there.

That's assuming you get a chance to see them.

Couldn't agree more Inn.
The UK's not exactly famous for clear skys but still just occasionaly there might just be a break in those clouds!
Lets hope for a clearer summer this year.
Last summer was very frustrating for UFO watching and I only recall 2 or 3 truly good nights. |

I was going to mention that the sky will be cloudy the majority of nights, but I figured everyone will already know that

Henut/Sarah's got the telescope. I don't have one. There's enough Interesting Stuff on Planet Earth to keep me occupied My girlfriend for one If I did have one, it would be the cosmos . Not twitty little Birds. Or stupid Squirrels. Big Sis is a Nature Nut. And still cries something chronic when she watches Bambi, bless her...

You cheeky devil! Just because I am sensitive, and you're not. And liking the natural world doesn't make me a 'nut'! Or a tree-hugger. I'm just saying that, if we took more care of it, then Planet Earth wouldn't be in such a mess. I wonder how (or why) your girlfriend puts up with you sometimes... |

Eh, Henut?
My Girlfriend ''puts up'' with me 'coz I am Caring and Sensitive. See -

And 'coz she thinks I'm one really Cool & Sexy Dude, naturally

We get a lot of very clear skies up here and very little light pollution. There's allegedly an area of high UFO activity called The Pebbles Triangle but the muppet that's claiming all the UFO sightings hasn't realised Peebles is under the main southern approach to Edinburgh Airport.

Was up north at my parents and we did a bit of star gazing.
I forgot how clear the skies are up there. In town we
have so much light pollution we hardly see any stars at all.
Saw quite a few falling stars. |

Edinburgh's a lovely city, DB. I've only been once (2001). And would like to go again. Travelled up by car. Can't vouch for the 'UFOs', though, Agentscott
Indeed, bitterbuck, light pollution, is a real pain when you want to see the night sky. The eclipses, meteor showers, comets, etc, I either saw from my parents' place, or while on holiday. I didn't realise how beautiful the stars were (and how many) until I've been in the countryside or on the beach. Away from buildings and streets. That's main reason why I use the telescope for watching wildlife when at home.
When you saw the ''falling star" did you make a wish I saw my first 'shooting star' (when I was about 4 or 5)with a friend. Can't recall what I wished for... . |

Statistically it's the most depressing city in the UK
But I will be going sometime too, maybe this summer - I want to visit the Vaults and Greyfriars Cemetery. |
