Digital devices record an absolute, of course there are those who say that the "spirit, etc" use the Hiss from analog tapes to form the EVPs but I think thats reaching a bit. ... If recording digitally, try and ensure that the device records in an uncompressed format - you don't want to be throwing the baby out with the bath water.
