Not a lantern as it was just white and no flickering.
Why would that rule out a Chinese Lantern?

Depends on the wind speed Bitter. If there's no wind they'll go straight up and carry on ascending until the burner goes out (up to a mile in some cases).
In relation to lantern/balloonss being mistaken for alien spacecraft here's a good article:

Thanks for the link DB.
Interesting that these 'lanterns' go as far back as
200AD. |

How can you be sure the hum was coming from the UFO and not somewhere else?.

Sounds like an aircraft to me. If it looks like a plane, flies like a plane and sounds like a plane...it's probably a plane or if you hear hoofbeats, think horses not Zebras

Maybe be it was a drug runner.
At times near our boarder with Mexico you'll hear of planes
flying 'under the radar' and with no lights as they drop the
drugs in the desert.
Just an idea. |

Have you considered the possibility that at the angle you saw it at and the position you saw it from you may not have been able to see the full complement of lights?.
I frequently see planes on approach to Edinburgh and from certain angles and locations relative to the aircraft only a very bright white light is seen.

Maybe, it was likley the ISS passing at a weird angle.
Then again perhaps it wasn't...thats the thing with minor sightings like that, you just have to many possible explanations. |

If it was a military spy plane, then surley it would be exempt from permanently operating marker lights? Doubt the F117 had them on during military operations in the gulf war.
Nothing quite like £10 million going down the drain thanks to saving £2.50 for a switch.
On the subject of wind (no laughing please), it may be still and calm at ground level, but maybe at 200 feet the wind speed is greatly increased.
You also say you were in an orchard? How dense were the trees? how far in were you?
You may of been sheltered from stroger winds on the opposite side of the orchard. |

Yes carlos this was likley explanable with something like that, it didn't do anything out of the ordinary.
Wind was up at the time but we was out of the trees and on an open grassy bit.
What we need is a sighting that performs and that I have had 3 times but yes this was just odd.
I think though anyplane must have standard lights to warn other craft it's presence even fighters.
In the sea it's law to have port and starboard on any vessel and I think it;'s the same in the sky. |
