Very strange images - mind if I ask if that was an ordinary digital camera you used as you said this was without a flash? Jst wondering as I'm hoping to take some snaps with my own digital camera (once it's fixed) in a dark room, but haven't a clue about settings for taking pics in the dark. |

Yes there were strong lights in this area, it was taken with a digital camera Kodak. When I first got into this aspect of the phenomena I was told by other researchers never to use a digital camera. at that time they were far to low in quality but now we have 7-12 mpx out there and these can be great for the study as the higher the image quality the better it can be enhanced.
I suggest you practice both with and without flashes and learn what regular camera artifacts look like. Remember a lot of orbs are dust or lens reflections. If you catch an orb without flash in a dark area then its harder to dismiss then say one that was taken with a flash against a dark area. Here look at these, I'm thinking about posting a few tutorials on techniques for those who are getting into this field.
How many orbs do you see here? These were taken with a flash. We were doing some work on a wall and I decided to get a good example of common misidentified orbs. These are dust from sanding the wall. I used a flash and the camera was set to auto. You can see the orbs better against darker BG. Look at fig 1 here:
In this one you can see the larger orbs with lots of smaller orbs. In Fig
I have inverted the image so the orbs stand out better.
What does this tell me about orbs? A lot, I have tried unsuccessfully to generate orbs with water droplets (in my cave experiment), and have only achieved it under dusty conditions. This also lends credibility to the orb in the cave I caught as there is no dust down there and the air is quite cold and pure.
My greatest advice to anyone that has a desire to do some ghost photography is be patient and learn to critique your captures. Get a good image editing software Photoshop, Paintshop, or GIMP which is free source. Learn to enhance your photos, not manipulate them but to enhance them to bring out light and dark areas for further examination.
If you are new you can upload your pics here and I can do some of it for you or better still help you to learn to do it yourself :) |

To me, the second photo clearly shows out of focus orbs, probably moisture droplets on or right in front of the lens.
If your pictures are taken with a digital camera 99% of orbs are "environmental" There has been a lot of study on this subject since first discovered with digital pictures.
So far just about everything points to "non" ghostly phenomenon. |

Those "Orbs" in the above pics are 100% man made, we were sanding the wall and I decided to use it as an experiment to research how easy it is to fake and or have misidentified "orbs". The air was literally thick with drywall dust. A perfect experiment IMO :) |

While on a ghost hunt in Virginia, at an old cemetery I was taking pics over a wall. I noticed dust right in front of the lens during the flash.
I to did some "experimenting" and sure enough, when there was dust visible there were "orbs" in the picture. |

Yep, thats why I usually throw out most orb photos, as most are caused by earthly factors IMO. I still can not get any results with rain or water though. |

Well, a "real orb" is dust in front of a digital camera lens. Thus the term orb used to describe spirit energy is not factual. So just eliminate the term "orb" from ghost discussions in my opinion. |

Not in the sense that people think as in MRX's pictures above. |

Not sure if I saw it on this forum or another but there was a photo of an orb with a smiley face in it.
Any one remember seeing that pic?
I'm sure you would call it environmental but it was pretty wild. |

I think Orbs in general are too controversial, thats why I can't use them as proof of anything. I have seen orbs where no dust could have been but what they were I have no idea as orbs in photos no matter the cause or origin all look almost identical. Could they be "spirit energy"? Sure they could, but they could also be, lens flare, light refraction, dust, mist, snow, etc. So it's best to throw them out and look for better proof IMO. |

Agreed, also in many photo's there are "light shafts" which so many are actually a piece of the persons hair directly in front of the lens which, like orbs, are out of focus and thus people think they are spirit energy. |
