The Phoenix or Firebird has a fascinating range of legends:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Phoenix_(mythology)

But is actually based upon observation by our ancient ancestors. When a meteorite travels through our atmosphere it begins to burn up. While it disintegrates, there are flashes and bursts of light. These can look as bright as the Sun. The ancients likened the whole spectacle to a fiery bird. The dust trail being like a tail. If the meteorite maintains its course, and doesn't tumble, a 'heat-cone' may develop. A bit like the one the Shuttle creates on re-entry.

A 'sonic boom' and detonations like thunder are heard. This is why meteorites found at impact sites by Assyrians and Babylonians were called Adad/Hadad Stones, after their storm gods. Because they are found in craters, they were thought to be 'egg's in 'nests' laid by a Firebird. Some are still warm when discovered. These Hadad Stones were worshipped as sacred objects. At the centre of the Kaaba in Mecca is The Black Stone, said to have been a meteorite found by Abraham.
