Travel writer experiences ghostly happenings whilst staying in Louisiana B&B.

"In an unnamed house in an unnamed town in a state named after King Louis XIV, I met a ghost." writes Andrew Evans for the National Geographic magazine.

Did he really have an encounter with the supernatural?.

“No, it’s not haunted,” she reassured me, but two seconds later, she began to elaborate. “Oh, there are stories, but nobody’s ever seen anything.” She paused, “I’ve never seen anything.”

Well thats that seed planted then.

If he had not of asked the owner, and she had not hinted at all, would he of experienced anything?

Or if he had experienced the noises, would he of rationally explained them rather than presuming it was a ghost?

He is in a old house that he doesnt know, yet he states the noises wasnt the house settling, how does he know?
9 out of 10 houses may creak, but that one left over may groan.

IMO yes he did.

carlos2010, there is a big difference between any house 'settling' and the distinct noises he heard:

He first felt the feeling of being watched in the bathroom (this is a real feeling - I personally can tell when I am being watched - an example: in the SAS when they train a soldier to creep up on an enemy to break his neck from behind; they teach him to look at the centre of his back, never at the back of his head because of this)

Then he distinctly heard someone walking around in the bathroom despite it being empty.

Loud thumps and bangs upstairs, the distinct noise of someone running down the stairs and then back up again, stacking china - not the noises of a house settling IMO.

There is a big difference between a house settling and china being stacked.

My point was that the seed has been planted in his head, and with this seed growing, it can push out all rational behaviour or the ability to explain noises.

How would he know what it sounds like if some one is "shuffling" around in the bathroom? He was there on his own. He heard a noise which he associated with the sound of some one "shuffling", coming from the bathroom. If he had stayed with some one and they were in the bathroom making noises, then later he heard the same noises, fair enough, a little unusual.
The cistern in my house certainly doesnt sound like a cistern refilling, it does sound like shuffling, if thats the case then they have closed the local OAP centre and put them all in my bathroom, Id put my money on the cistern or the hot water tank refilling in that house makes a noise similar to 99.9% of water systems across the world.

How do you know what noises that house makes when its settling?
How does he know what noise is made when some one runs up and down those stairs?

Im not entirely convinced, think its just for good reading and nothing more.

I agree that a seed can be planted, but I just don't think that was the case here - he sounded like a very rational and logical individual. When he asked is the place haunted - if the woman quickly and confidently replied no, and nothing more was said about it before she left - in this case I don't think it would have made a difference. Of coure talking about it being haunted just before she left wasn't a good idea, but unless it was auditory hallucinations IMO he was hearing spirits.

None of us can come to any definite conclusions from an article like this, we can just come to an opinion - If someone does not believe ghosts exist, then it has to be a seed planted in his head and sounds of the house setting or something else. I do believe they exist, and after reading the entire article I believe it ''probably'' was ghosts.

Many rational, intelligent individuals have been fooled by both natural phenomenon and faked phenomenon - just look at Sir Arthur Conan Doyle and his belief in both fairies and obviously bogus mediums.
A 'settling' property can make some genuinely strange noises due to the rate at which the various materials used in its construction expand and contract at different rates.
I'll post a detailed analysis of this particular 'encounter' when I've got a wee bit more time as I'm very busy with work and photography at the moment. However I concur with everything Carlos has said Smile
