In 1977 the builders working on a housing development directly opposite Highgate Cemetery(what a lovely place to live) went bankrupt and while the courts were deciding who would take over to complete the work my security company was hired to guard all the materials from thieves. In those days patrols were made using patrol clocks which had a clock with a tape to record the point and the exact time the point was clocked so there was evidence the guard was doing his rounds instead of on his backside or fast asleep in the guard house. One of the points was directly opposite the cemetery and one evening about 9 pm I saw a group of four youths sitting on a gravestone and chatting so I climbed over the low fence and using the cover of some headstones and bushes crept close enough to overhear their conversation. Basically it was that they were "initiating" the youngest youth. His task was to collect a flower from one of the graves not far from Karl Marx, tomb and the return to the cemetery gate where the others were waiting to prove he was brave enough to join their gang. I watched them walk off to show him the bouquet of flowers and then back toward the main gate, but as they did so another youth who had been watching secreted himself behind a headstone on the side very near I was so I decided to wait to see what he was up to. It wasn,t long before the fellow to be initiated came walking down the path enroute to the grave. The fellow who intended to scare him didn,t hear me walk softly behind him as leaves were blowing about in a brisk breeze. He was about to jump up and shout "Boo" as the other lad drew near so I tapped him on the left shoulder before he could move. He turned and I said "Boo". I,ve never seen two boys run so fast before and they cleared that eight foot gate at the entrance to the cemetery in a single bound. I often wonder who they thought was scaring them, but I don,t think they tried it again. I was just sorry I scared the poor lad who was being initiated, but I couldn,t help that.

My fellow guard and I sure laughed a lot about it. Not so funny as a run-in I had with satanists not long after that in the same cemetery. There again according to all the curses they made against me I should have died more than 30 years ago!
