Some times to much equipment gets in the way. Pen and paper are essential always. |

It takes your hands up! Just buy a tape dictaphone and set it to sound activated. Then you just have to say what you want to document..Keep your pen and paper. |

Actually a notepad is an awesome tool. Say you see something, and you shout out "Dude! I just saw a headless horseman" And your friend says "Yeah, I totally saw it, too.! The whole thing becomes worthless as evidence.
If you have a note book, though...Well, you simply scream "Oh my god! Did you see that?" and your friend says "Yes. Let's each write what we saw and see if it matches." |

Good idea but it wouldn't stop people making things up - they'd just be writing down what they didn't see. Notebook, digital camera, dictaphone and tape measure - about the only real tools a 'ghost hunter' really needs.

It's not a stupid question Flossy, it's very valid.
Let's say that a haunted location has a bedroom where footsteps are heard walking from the bedroom door to the bedside. A competent investigator would try to gather all the reports and determine roughly how many 'footsteps' are heard.
A tape measure would establish the exact distance from the door to the bed and then a real life human would walk that distance. If the number of footfalls made by the human approximately matches the approximate average of that reported by the people who have heard the ghostly footsteps then the investigator can make a valid judgement as to whether the two match and are realistic with being genuine footsteps and not dodgy plumbing or someone simply walking in another part of the property.

lol nice, first i heard of that one. :)
i do think it is important to document ur findings on paper.. because on dictaphone, Video.. say u caught something you have no paper work to prove, were u was, who was there, what time, date, what u did before, what you did after, who was in the room next, was the camera in working order, was there any sorce of interactions etc.. as without a court of law style evidence report, your recordings and footage will not be enough.. to be proven in my eyes.
Thats really go tho with the tape measure i can think of another reason to use one..
If people have the feeling on been pushed, or have been pushed down the stairs, it would be worth to measure the steps to see any difference because a small difference can make you stumble and fall. |

Good point. Being pushed is a commonly reported experience in some locations where people all too easily attribute it to the supernatural when it is far more likely to have a more mundane cause.
