I've had two OBE's and both have seemed very real.
The first was during a frightening episode as a child which may have been either some sort of nightmare type experience or a ghost sighting.
During this episode I saw the scene from above from a height and an angle that would have placed me at the ceiling. I saw my body moving below me and I knew that it was me but I felt completely detached and uncaring despite what was apparently happening below.
The next time I had an OOB experience I was an adult. I won't say where I was or what was happening as that's another story but it occurred during the day when I was awake and it was one of the most emotional events in my life and at the point of highest emotion, and despair is a good word for it, I saw myself from above and this time the "ceiling" was much lower than a normal rooms ceiling and what I saw reflected the lower nature of the "ceiling." This time there was slightly different to the first in that I felt very disorientated but I knew that what I was seeing was my own body and again it didn't seem to bother me.
Both episodes only lasted a few seconds before normality was restored.
I have no real explanation for these events, both of which happened at moments of extreme emotional disturbance.
It may be that at these times of extreme disturbance my minds world model and perception was altered to such a degree that I simply hallucinated, or it could be that my consciousness left my body and then returned again. |

Thanks for sharing your experiences with us Woof.
I admit I really have no knowledge of OBE's but I am interested.
Just a few questions.
So on both of these experiences you had no control
over the OBE?
Did your body have the feeling of floating or weightlessness?
You mentioned emotional disturbance, I wonder if this was a way for your body/mind to protect itself.

Hello,
I don't think that there was any physical feeling at all. I had no control over it, one second I was in my body and I saw things from a normal perspective, through my eyes, and the next second it was as if a switch had been flicked and I was above looking down.
I suppose that there are two possibilities, either my mind was so disturbed at the time that my world model or how I interpreted it went badly wrong for a short time or my consciousness left my body.
There was no white light or feeling of love or anything and no shock when the experience ended and normality returned.
It's not something that I can do at will. |
