It's not a bunch of hooey--it's real. But please do not confuse black magick with Wiccans or the practicing of true magick: they are NOT the same!
While I am no longer Pagan, I studied it for awhile as an exploration into other religions after abandoning my Christian upbringing. I met some wonderful Wiccans in the course of my Pagan foray, and I must say they were the nicest, most peace-loving people I've ever known. Wiccans never foist their religion on others, nor do they practice ANY form of negative magick: the Wiccan rede (sacred principle) is "Do as ye will, as ye harm none."
Every true Wiccan abides steadfastly to this.
This is not to say there are no "black witches." Some people misuse magick just as some people misuse knives, and certainly there are negative persons who turn their power towards evil.
Note that there is also a distinction between witches and Satanists--most people think they're one and the same, which if they only knew they would realize how ridiculous that is! Witches do not even believe in Satan, so why would they worship him?
Wiccans and others who practice witchcraft, or The Craft as many call it, have high morals in their magick, using it only for good. For example, they will not cast a spell to draw a particular person into your life, for that would be manipulation and a violation of the other person's free will. Instead they might, at your request, cast a spell to draw *love* into your life, perhaps using terms like "soulmate" or "perfect match" in the incantation. This is just another version of prayer.
My suggestion to any who are interested is to do an Internet search for Wicca and Paganism and see what you find. Wikipedia.org has some helpful info to get you started, and there many Pagan/Wiccan websites to be found.

Hate to be a party pooper but ive been most of the above for a time, just because someone is prcaticing black magic, it does not mean that they are 'misusing their power' it simply means that they are using their magic for selfish reasons more often than not and not 'for the good of all' like most pagans and white witches practice magic, just cause its black magic it doesnt make it evil. white magic is magic where you are doing it for others, to help them with something say. The satanism thing is a little off the ball as a 'witch' is someone who practices whichcraft, a pagan is a paganist not a which, and a white wich is also a wich therefore satanists are witches as most do practice black magic as that is a main part of the religion also along with sacrifices which are supposed to be young virgins as they have the purest souls but if this was done you should attend the burial plot of the victim every year and leave them a black gift.... needless to say these are very old practices but the invisibility spells are still widely used but in most cases these are practiced by astral projection and not the old golden rooster at the crossroads at midnight scenario, so satanists are wiches to, otherwise what is it that makes them a satanist? catholics pray and most satanists use conjuration.

Yes, Koala, I'm sure you're right. There are many gradations within *all* religions, white, black or otherwise. Even the practitioners themselves do not always agree on what constitutes a solid defnition--even Baptists here get into hot debate over which beliefs are "best" or "right," and that's just one facet of Protestant Christianity in the US.
I didn't even mention the eclectics and solitaries. 
As for misuse, that just happens to be my opinion, coming from my own spiritual viewpoint. Others will certainly disagree, as is their privilege. The only point I was trying to make is that yes, witches and witchcraft are real. All the rest comes from my own experience and study into the area, and my acquaintance with those who are practicing Pagans/Wiccans, which are by no means all-inclusive.
It also comes from an American standpoint, which may differ from that elsewhere in other parts of the world.
Just my two and half cents' worth. :)

no im moving in milton keynes and the only way i'd leave is if spookey moved here! (nuthin personal!) she's probably the most clumsy and unlucky person ive spoken to in my whole entire life and i'd probably have my house burnt down......purely by accident!!!!..... 3 months sounds good though as just put my forms in for the 3rd time last week so i will let you know what happens!!!
