I experienced this a few nights ago and I was terrified. My boyfriend had woken me up in the night snoring and so I went to sleep on the sofa. It was around 2:30am. I fell asleep and had terrible dreams, one of which I was driving in my car and the brakes failed and I smashed through a shop window at high speed but on colision with the shop front I realised I was about to die and in slow motion glanced to my side and saw a picture of my mum and daughter and I called out my daughters name and then was overcome with the sensation of blood rushing to my head and my body became hot and my stomache was tight and as I smashed through the glass my eyes closed and I awoke. As i awoke, I lay there still for a moment recalling the dream and thinking how awful it was. I heard footsteps in the hallway coming toward me and thought it was my boyfriend and called to him about 3 times before realising that I was paralyzed and although I could see my front room in my mind and knew exactly where I was, my eyes where still closed and I felt trapped inside myself. As the footsteps became closer, I began to panic, telling myself to 'wake up! wake up!' I knew that there was a presence behind me, right above my head but I couldnt see it. I started to really panic then and was screaming at myself to wake up, then, and this is the terrifying part, whatever was stood at the head of the sofa began humming, it was right by my head!! I struggled to gain consciousness but then suddenly snapped out of it and jumped up off the couch and shouted for my boyfriend. As I ran into the bedroom and woke him, I knew he hadnt been awake and so I checked on my daughter who too was fast asleep. It was 3:35am when I finally snapped out of the creepy paralysis. I explained what happened to my partner and had him check the house and then finally tucked in tightly to him and went back to sleep. I have been petrified ever since. I recall this happening to me on a few occasions throughout my life but i dont recall anything as sinister as this. Can anyone please tell me who was behind me and why it was humming?? thanks, Cari :) |

Welcome to the forum Cari
That was an interesting story - I really don't know whether it was something supernatural or just sleep paralysis, but it sounded terrifying. |

I have looked on a few other forums and other people have experienced the exact same thing!! thats freaked me out even more as I kinda put it down to a nightmare!! WEIRD!! |

Hey Carianne!
I've experienced sleep paralysis and I don't recall it following a dream. But nothing compares to the terror you experience while it's happening. The thing about sleep paralysis is you're still half asleep so you can have visual and auditory hallucinations. So you're awake but the dream is still playing out in your head. That's probly where the humming came from.
Also for some reason there's a better chance of it happening while you're sleeping on your back. Which position were you in while you were on the couch? |
