I just got it today, the Mel-8704! This is the first meter designed for "ghost hunting" and paranormal applications or so they say. Either way I have always wanted one of the Mel series EMF meters, they are reliable, easy to read and accurate. When I saw this thing and what it promised I had to give it a go.
It is advertised as a 3 in one unit, what that means is it is a EMF meter, an ambient thermometer, and a bright light to help you not bump into a wall or fall down a stair well. Lets start with my initial reaction to the functionality of this device. I love the feel of it, it is weighted and feels like an expensive research tool should. If you have bought some of the lower end tools you understand what I mean. It has a built in stand which lets the meter rest at about a 45 degree angle on a flat surface. This is a nice feature for recording without touching. It also has a brass ring to screw into a tripod for easy mouting instationary environments.
All of this an I have not even turned it on yet! Ok initial power up is nice, the LCD screen glows a bright green, it would be nice if it had interchanging LEDs to make the screen a custom color, especially red so as not to mess with night vision. But thats what red cellophane is for :)
The range is in either milli gauss or microteslas. There are 20, 200, 2000, 20000, range settings on the device. One of the nice things about this meter is that it offers a Type K thermometer built in to the unit. The temp range is from -58F to 2498 degrees. Now the cool part!
Both readings can be shown on the screen and recorded during your investigation. You can then go back and view the highest and lowest readings. This is perfect to establish a base line reading prior to an actual walk through. The EMF can be put into a mode called "BURST" mode where the unit reads EMF measurements nearly in real time. However the temp reading will only be updated every 1 sec.
Either way the temperature is for measurement near the actual device and not at a point X feet away from the unit. It is not a beginner EMF meter, if you understand the basics of how a digital EMF operates you should have little problem learning to navigate around the features in this meter.
It's a pricey meter right around $110 (ebay) including shipping, and it came with a K probe which was optional everywhere else. This meter lists for $129USD right now but as more and more investigators pick it up expect a serious supply and demand curve which will likely drive the Me-8704's price higher. It already replaces a type K thermometer (about $130USD) on it's own. Basically you are paying for a great EMF meter with functions that no other meter in this price range can touch and you are getting the Type K thermometer as a bonus.
I can not wait to field test this thing, when I do expect a field review but I already see this as a powerful adition to our tool kit. |

Profesional Measurement, www.pro-measure.com
I tested it out a bit more today in a known high EMF area and it worked great! |

It looks easy to use, which I'm glad about! Most devices today are too hard to use!
Whatever happened to easy things?! |

It has proven itself time and time since I got it. I saw that one they also made a red light version. They are releasing one this year with a built in vibration sensor, that may be my next one. I want all our team to have one of these. You will like the burst mode a lot. Post up your results after you try it out. |

No grave yards yet. It's first use was a residential where it recorded a massive EMF spike as our K2 confirmed it that was when I decided the MEL was the right choice.
When you get it be sure to familiarize yourself with the buttons, you will use the record function a lot. Be sure you learn to turn on record and burst modes. When you get to the area of your investigation turn on record and walk around, review the base line reading you get for each zone. Durring your actual investigation you can use your recorded baseline as a reference point for EMF spikes in the areas. |

I read up on the Mel Meter
the creator of the mel meter say it was named after older daughter who passed on and the model number
is the date she was born and when she passed on.
