My god they are seting up UFO debunking conventions now?
He says so much about the UFO's not being alien he forgot to identify them with an earthly explantion which he can't.
So if they are not alien what can they be, putting asisde the rubbish debunkers suggestions, like saying they are all birds and ballons, if not them then what?
I find it very strange that we are being told we cant even beleive our own eyes.
Go outside and look at a plane, identify one and when you do, this guy is going to tell you that actually you was mistaken because you can't trust your eyes and are subject to faults.

He wasn't debunking UFO's he was simply stating the criteria required before science would take those that claim they're seeing and interacting with aliens would be given serious consideration by mainstream science.
So if they are not alien what can they be, putting asisde the rubbish debunkers suggestions, like saying they are all birds and ballons, if not them then what?
Many are obviously birds and weather/party balloons. Many photographs and videos similar to the ones I've posted are simple misidentifications such as reflections and larger promotional items.
Many UFO sightings in the USA are planes trailing lighted advertising banners. Another source of many sightings are bright stars - particularly Venus, with several accounts of airports being closed due to this.
There are a multitude of things that can be misinterpreted as UFO's which is not surprising given the creative capabilities of the human imagination.
At the end of the day this man is an expert - he's an astrophysicist and far more qualified to talk about the likelihood of extraterrestrial visitation than anyone on this forum, furthermore his views are very representative of the vast majority of his peers.
I find it very strange that we are being told we cant even beleive our own eyes.
Whether you believe it or not Agentscott, that is very much the case. Our eyesight is not perfect and what we perceive is highly influenced by our culture and our beliefs.
Have you ever been fooled by an illusionist or and optical illusion? and how many lights in the sky can you say were absolutely not commercial/private aircraft, lanterns or celestial bodies.
I'm not saying that we're not being visited by aliens or there is some undiscovered source behind some UFO reports but like Neil Tyson I require better evidence than I've yet seen - and I've been looking for 35 years and I'm seeing an increasing amount of rubbish posted on forums and YouTube that people are accepting as alien spacecraft. Just because a light/experience can't be explained does not mean that it's unexplainable.

I agree Flossy, which is why I posted it. I use the word 'evidence' and 'perception' quite a lot which must be annoying and frustrating for certain members but ultimately science does not make progress without testing the evidence for a claim or hypothesis. The problem with the whole alien thing is that the evidence is weak and physical evidence (as Neil Tyson pointed out) in non existent.
