We had to do 30 peaks a year, three of those in another country. Plus so many hours instruction. Worked at Plas y Brenin for a short while, then moved to Parson House Farm OPC. Taught water sports at Rother Valley Country park, Ulley and a few other centres. Never realy had time to get any long distance stuff in, always training. But did quiet a lot of multi pitch climbing and ice work in Scotland. I was a senior Kayak instructor and beach and pool life guard too. I aquired most of my land based stuff while in the army. 2nd battalion Light infantry. Then airborne infantry. Stationed at Winchester, Sir John Moore Barracks, trained with the Royal Green Jackets or R.D.J's as they were known back then. Its all gone now, just the YORKSHIRE Regiment. Many moons ago lol. Came out on a M.D after an airborne incident. Ner mind. I also did a lot of voluntary work through endeavour training, part of the John hunt exploration group. Working with kids. Did some Personal development stuff with them too, and assessment work. All good life experience. |

Never fancied para-gliding, though Ive done my fare share of jumps. Gained level 2 sniper qualifications and loads of orienteering stuff and pioneering too. Just part of the job. Great way to get away from guard duty. My comanding officer was Lt Col Dure, he had a keen interest in Photography, i used to go on photographic days out with him, again got me off barracks lol. Owt to get away. Ive been busy and still never stop. I suffer from obsessive compulsive desorder, won't let me sit still. Paranormal investigation is a wonderfull subject for me lol. |

Did you ever do any mountain rescue Iain?
We have quite a few mountains that have trails around the city here.
At least once or twice a month you here of someone falling or getting
stuck on a mountain and needing rescue.
I've got to hand it to those rescue teams some of the areas they need
to get to are treacherous and then getting the person down safely to boot. |

I did a bit of stuff, its expected. While working at Parson House Farm we were in the paeks in Derbyshire so we helped out quite a lot if we were residential. People are rather silly sometimes. But its a job thats needs to be done. Good guys though. We used to get drunk once we got in, a lot of those guys were farmers and such like and have lived up there all there lives. They know how to work and they know how to play. Good days too. |

Sounds class Iain - I've done a few jumps myself, but only strapped on to the instructor the best rush ever, and I will do more.
You did sniper training? If I got trained in sniping I wouldn't leave - I've heard it's extremely tough course. Did you never think of staying or the special forces selection?
Did you do any tours? |

Na, special forces is too much like hard work and they are generly Billy no mates too. Im too social. Sniper training is hard work too, but in a different way. Its just another string to the bow. I didn,t leave , it was a medical discharge. Helicopter injury. ( long story and don't like to ponder on it too much). It was the life I'd planned for myself till I retired, but wasn't to be. I adapted and moved on. |

Well at least you can say you did it - that military discipline never leaves you does it? Useful for life I think.
I have considered joining the army myself but I am a catholic from N.Ire - but who knows maybe in the future. |

Yeah but another thing is I think it would be better to join as an officer and I have no A levels/degree so maybe do them first. |
