I'll go with Occam's Razor.
The simplest explanation is actually the most likely. |

I've heard of this. But am not quite sure what it is. Not a shaving implement, obviously. |

These Chinese lanterns have alot to answer for. Back in early February I headed up the Pentland hills in Edinburgh, to set off a few of these lanters, because my mate was getting married. We set off about a dozen of them and, the next day there was an article in the local Newspaper about "Mysterious" lights in the sky above the Pentland Hills. We found it very amusing! |

I remember when they first really "took off" in the UK, we set a few off from work and after a couple of days there was an article in a local newspaper, about an article in a newspaper on the east coast reporting sights of a light in the sky etc and also a handglider in distress. The wreckage of a lantern was found to be the culprit after Air - Sea Rescue was scrambled.
Obviously Im not stating that it was indeed the lantern which we released, they last on average around 20 minutes, however with air streams varying speeds and winds it seems one hell of a coincidence. |

In a way I can see exactly where DB is coming from though. The wind speed and direction can vary in extremes depending on the altitude. Also so can the temperature, the reason temperature is mentioned is because of this: In the same way a mirage works in a desert in the day, particles move faster and therefore need more of their own space when they are hotter. The air is full of hot cold and warm pockets regardless of where you are, and it's also possible that the air can be cold in one place but get warmer and warmer and warmer by distance. A possibility is that you could have seen a lantern (don't dismiss yet, let me explain) which as moving in a wind that you cannot feel because of it's altitude, is passing through warmer and warmer air (which is what causes wind, which can be very violent further up in the atmosphere explaining the speed) but as passing through the warmer air is almost magnified by the faster moving particles (caused by warmer air) as it moves higher into the atmosphere making it appear to be staying in the same altitude. I know I just sound like another doubter, but I feel this could explain it. |

Well again all I can say is I believe it wasn't a lantern or any type of aircraft - as for what it was, I really don't know. |

I'm thinking the same Cactus but we should give 'them' a chance
