It was the first time my parents and I had been to St Albans. [The Red Lion is a former Coaching Inn very near the Abbey.]
Our rooms were in different parts of the inn. Mine was in a short 'dead end' corridor. This passage overlooked the arch from the street into the courtyard. So I had a clear view of 'comings' and 'goings'.
My room had a low ceiling. And was very small, barely enough room for the cupboard and bed. And, therefore, well-lit with no shadowy corners. We had just returned from the theatre, and it was late at night. About 11 PM. I had just got ready for bed, and turned out the light...when... All hell broke loose!
There were loud bangings and scrapings from the room next door. My bed violently shook. The noise was unbearable in that tiny room. I was utterly terrified. After about 10-15 minutes all fell silent. I tentatively crept out into the corridor. It was empty. Something made me hold back from knocking on my immediate neighbour's door.... For the rest of that night I barely slept a wink!
Next morning I made enquiries. A chambermaid said the other rooms in my corridor were empty. Then went on to relate that some time in the past [she didn't know when] a man had hung himself from a beam in the room next to mine. A few years before our stay a young couple had a bizarre experience in that room. They complained to the manager that the bed [with them in it] had risen up, rotated, then floated back down! Thank goodness we were only at the Red Lion one night.... |

Welcome to the forums Alex. That had to been one messed up night. A residual haunting complete with sound effects and motion. How old were you then? |

Thank you YB. Hope you are having a good weekend. I was twenty-one at the time, BTW. This is the most 'extreme experience' of the paranormal I've had. |
