My only visit was in Summer 1995, while at Unversity. I was only there a few hours. But it left a lasting impression. What drew me there: my studies [which included the Dissolution of the Monasteries]; and my interest in Arthurian Legend.
We only saw the famous George and Pilgrim Hotel from the outside. Reputedly it is haunted by a ghostly monk and his lover. But I didn't know this at the time. I also wasn't aware then of the controversial early 20th Century investigations of the Abbey by Bligh Bond. 
While my friend went to the Abbey Museum [in St Patrick’s Chapel], I explored and took photos. Apart from a gardener, I virtually had the place to myself. Or did I? Although it was a very hot day I felt really chilly. I had the sensation of ‘being watched’ by ‘someone unseen’. A monk perhaps? ‘He’, I felt, kept his distance. But was still too close for comfort! My friend noticed I was anxious to leave.
We proceeded to the Tor, with its lonely tower. [All that remains of St Michael’s Church.] Neither of us wanted to get out the car! The place seemed to ‘radiate’ pure evil. [BTW, in 1539, when the Abbey was dissolved by Henry VIII, the last Abbot and two monks were barbarically executed there for High Treason.]  We left, rapidly… . I will never go back.

the whole of that area feels very weird to me, all expectant and buzzy and makes my head go dizzy. 
have you been to the avebury stones and stonehenge? they are weird places too. best to go when its cold as there isnt too many people walking about. |

Good evening, Twinks. The Glastonbury visit was part of an exhausting five day West Country 'tour'. Which included Wells, Bath, Salisbury [and Old Sarum], and Bristol. But, unfortunately, not Avebury or Stonehenge. I suspect because my interest lies in Medieval Architecture, esp churches, cathedrals, and abbeys. This subject featured [a lot] in the Heritage Studies part of my Degree.

your degree sounds really interesting.
we stayed at a b&b in old sarum. lovely old farmhouse with uneven floors and wooden furniture everywhere.

Hi Twinks. When we went it was pouring with rain. But, even so, there was a decent view of New Sarum [aka Salisbury].
I've stayed in a really quirky inn like that [Colchester? Chichester?] Where the floor sloped to the window, so the wardrobe doors kept swinging open! Our hotel room in Venice had creaky boards, and one actually see-sawed!!
My favourite secular buildings have 'character' and minimal/'simple' decor:- exposed beams, bare wood [or tile or flagstone floors], white-washed walls, open log fires, antique dark-wood furniture... .

Until her death in December 1994 my Nan [Dad's mother] had a flat in Bournemouth. I think it was in Alton Lodge, 53 Talbot Avenue. The company that might now manage the building is on these websites:-

My Nan married twice. My dad's father was her first husband. [He was a Scottish farmer, but I've never discovered how they met. I know very little about him.] Her second was a Mr Stevens. He died the year I was born.
