So apparently the world is going to end tomorrow
I watched a report on it on ITN earlier today - people have built massive bunkers etc... all because of the mayan calander ending etc...
Has anyone been keeping up with this? What do any of you think?
Personally I think its a load of bollocks |

Maybe not tomorrow, maybe not in our lifetime, but out there somewhere there's a huge lump of rock hurtling through space, and it's got our planet's name on it. |

Or maybe the next 65 minutes, as there is currently no monitoring system in operation to warn us.
All we can hope is that it doesn't happen before we can at least develop the technology to deflect it, if not away from Earth, at least to an internationally agreed area of zero-importance, whose obliteration won't be detrimental to mankind and may even be of benefit.
I believe the current consensus favours this area. |

No monitoring system to warn us? What about the Sentry Monitoring System?
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sentry_(monitoring_system)
It says on NASA's site:
''NASA astronomers are carrying out a survey called the Spaceguard Survey to find any large near-Earth asteroids long before they hit. We have already determined that there are no threatening asteroids as large as the one that killed the dinosaurs. All this work is done openly with the discoveries posted every day on the NASA Near-Earth Object Program Office website so you can see for yourself that nothing is predicted to hit in 2012.''
As nothing is predicted to hit in 2012, I think we can rule out the next 65 minutes
lol I guessed the area before I clicked the link
If the asteroid was small enough to cause a blast radius no greater than 5 miles wide, then that would indeed be a good target. Newry 'nucks', as we call them, are of no use. |
